Melayne Stone hears voices in her head
TV Psychic Melayne Stone promotes herself as the "Cockney Songbird".
It would be impolite to crack a joke about singing fat ladies, but for Melayne, the misleading advertising will shortly be coming to an end.
According to Melayne's handout (available here and here),
"Melayne is one of the World's most powerful psychic mediums and psychic counsellors. She is the seventh daughter of a seventh child. Fifth generation seeress, clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient, clairessent and claircognizant [sic]. She will give you amazing indepth [sic] accuracy of [sic] loved ones from the other side, including survival evidence of life after death..."
The real meaning of all those long words, of course, is that Melayne hears voices in her head.
The ASA don't allow psychics to say they're accurate unless they hold some pretty convincing evidence. No psychic has ever produced such evidence, but who knows, perhaps the Cockney Songbird will be the first?
Melayne's ASA complaint appears below, along with complaints about another psychic, Emilia Sokolova, and a palmist, Julia Yakerson. They're all based on handouts I picked up at Mind Body Spirit last week.
MELAYNE STONE
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Melayne Stone, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's psychic reading service.
1. "Melayne is one of the World's most powerful psychic mediums... She will give you amazing indepth [sic] accuracy of loved ones from the other side, including survival evidence of life after death."
I challenge whether the advertiser can substantiate her claim that her psychic readings are accurate.
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser."
EMILIA SOKOLOVA (handout available here and here)
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Emilia Sokolova, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's psychic reading service.
1. "I had my first reading with Emilia some months ago and all her predictions have come true. Emilia is a [sic] honest, direct and accurate reader..."
I challenge whether the advertiser's testimonial claim that her psychic readings are "accurate" is misleading.
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser."
JULIA YAKERSON (handout available here)
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Julia Yakerson, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's palm-reading service.
1. "I am a genuine and honest reader. 'Very accurate' is the usual feedback I get..."
I'd like to challenge whether the advertiser can substantiate her claim that her palm readings are "very accurate".
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser or with the spiritual industry in general."

I would have thought testimonials are evidence for a psychics accuracy. Melayne has plenty even on the web. Go to http://www.psychic-tv.com/testimonials/melayne to see them. As for me I had a reading with Melayne at Mind Body and Spirit. As promised I didn't have to say anything. She just gave me 15 minutes of pure accurate information on things only I knew about. She is excellent. Linda Munday
ReplyDeleteHi Linda,
ReplyDeleteDid you, by any chance, make a recording of the reading?
There are a number of reliability problems associated with "psychic" readings when they're not done under controlled conditions. That's why the regulatory authorities won't accept testimonials like the ones you suggest.
Hi there Mr Sceptical letter writer, I have noticed that you were complaining about the mediums advertising, have you considered having a reading to review a Psychics abilities?

Hi Charlotte,
ReplyDeleteNice guerilla advertising! Not only have I had readings from psychics, but I can also deliver a psychic reading as good as (or better) than any of them.
This is the book from which I learned. It is recommended magicians and sceptics alike:

Hi Mr Sceptical letter writer, I am a qualified mortgage broker and can make more money in that field, (so it's not about the money) I haven't read any books about cold reading but imagine that the information offered is based on statistics, I am sure that, as in any line of business, some of the service providers will act dishonestly. I work at events all over the UK, (you can pick up my advert at the BAPS stand this weekend) I only require minimal information from my clients when giving a reading (recorded onto cd) and I give information that is specific to that person, as you have had readings in the past, it would not be fair for me to charge you for a reading "if you thought it to be dishonest" so, if I said I'll let you be the judge, then you would have no reason to be afraid of having a reading. The bottom line is, you can complain from behind the screen about anyone (including me as all of the above is not substantiated with evidence) or, you can have your reading and shout from the treetops about how good I am.

Hello Mr Sceptical Letter Writer. I would like to say something with regards to your complaint about Melayne Stone. I have had readings with this lady and she has NEVER been wrong! I have had many different readings over the years but Melayne Stone is so accurate! She knows things that only I know about my past and as for the future? Well, she told me a few years ago that I would one day put pen to paper and write a book - at the time I thought NEVER she must be seeing my late partner who indeed was a published children's author. But some six years on my first book was published in December 2011. She also told me that a man from my youth, will come back into my life. I am now seeing my first real true love 32 years on! She also told me that two of my daughters would marry very close together, one got married in September and now one is getting married in April having just got engaged at Christmas! She told me that I would go through a terrible time financially and that my mother's health would suffer. Mum had a stroke a few months ago and I have lost my business! My advice? Please do not be judgmental of anyone! Melayne Stone is FANTASTIC!
ReplyDeleteHello Mr Sceptical letter writer .. i would like to add my support to melayne stone .. i have had many reading with her since 2006, and may i say she still amazes me to this day. she told me about my father being terminally ill , he was diagnosed with cancer, mel told me that i should speak to him before its too late.. she also told me that ill have a son , my son was born 1 year after my reading . due to her amazing accuracy and honesty and motivation to help people who are in need , i must take my hat off to her.. i have recommended her to my family and friends and they have always been left stunned on how mel can know this which only they would know.., quite frankly we need more spiritually motivated people like mel and i had to write my experience of her . I truly am blessed to know her .. and know i can honestly say.. its true angels really do walk amoung us and that angels name is melayne stone ... antony
ReplyDeleteHey Mr Sceptic,
ReplyDelete@ Charlotte has the best point. go for a reading with Melayne and then you can judge for yourself. Until you do carping on about readings in "controlled conditions" is totally nonsensical. A reading is either accurate for the client or it isn't. End of story! I can happily recommend Melayne for not only her accuracy of my actual issues but of the timing they will and then do arise. Some people have a gift. Some people use their gift to help others through painful difficult times in their lives or help to revel and celebrate the fortunate ones and then there are those who spend their time picking holes in and criticising other peoples work. ! know you know this but your opinion would have alot more weight (at least it would be your actual experience) if you did go for a reading yourself and see what if anything, rings true for you. Especially because it's not their existence you seem to be questioning but their accuracy or claims thereof...
Maybe being closed off to this stuff serves you in some way... ever considered that?
