Melayne Stone hears voices in her head
TV Psychic Melayne Stone promotes herself as the "Cockney Songbird".
It would be impolite to crack a joke about singing fat ladies, but for Melayne, the misleading advertising will shortly be coming to an end.
According to Melayne's handout (available here and here),
"Melayne is one of the World's most powerful psychic mediums and psychic counsellors. She is the seventh daughter of a seventh child. Fifth generation seeress, clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient, clairessent and claircognizant [sic]. She will give you amazing indepth [sic] accuracy of [sic] loved ones from the other side, including survival evidence of life after death..."
The real meaning of all those long words, of course, is that Melayne hears voices in her head.
The ASA don't allow psychics to say they're accurate unless they hold some pretty convincing evidence. No psychic has ever produced such evidence, but who knows, perhaps the Cockney Songbird will be the first?
Melayne's ASA complaint appears below, along with complaints about another psychic, Emilia Sokolova, and a palmist, Julia Yakerson. They're all based on handouts I picked up at Mind Body Spirit last week.
MELAYNE STONE
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Melayne Stone, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's psychic reading service.
1. "Melayne is one of the World's most powerful psychic mediums... She will give you amazing indepth [sic] accuracy of loved ones from the other side, including survival evidence of life after death."
I challenge whether the advertiser can substantiate her claim that her psychic readings are accurate.
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser."
EMILIA SOKOLOVA (handout available here and here)
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Emilia Sokolova, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's psychic reading service.
1. "I had my first reading with Emilia some months ago and all her predictions have come true. Emilia is a [sic] honest, direct and accurate reader..."
I challenge whether the advertiser's testimonial claim that her psychic readings are "accurate" is misleading.
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser."
JULIA YAKERSON (handout available here)
"I'm writing to complain about a handout for Julia Yakerson, which I picked up from a stall at the 'Mind Body Spirit' exhibition in London on 26th May.
The handout promotes the advertiser's palm-reading service.
1. "I am a genuine and honest reader. 'Very accurate' is the usual feedback I get..."
I'd like to challenge whether the advertiser can substantiate her claim that her palm readings are "very accurate".
I can confirm that I have no connections with the advertiser or with the spiritual industry in general."
